We’re remote but easy to get to

Dunaverty Rock Self Catering is located in the picturesque south coast of the Kintyre Peninsula. We’re just a 15 minute drive (10 miles / 16 km) south from Campbeltown  and 12 miles (19 km) from Campbeltown Airport, near Machrihanish.

Travelling here by car, bus or on foot, Kintyre is also served by daily flights and ferry links.

  • We’re just 16 miles away from Northern Ireland and it’s possible to get here via passenger ferry.
  • There’s also a handy car ferry with an additional Summer-only rail and sail service between Glasgow and Campbeltown via Ardrossan on the North Ayrshire coast.
  • Kintyre is also the gateway to the islands of Islay, Jura and the beautiful island of Gigha. Ferries to Gigha, Arran and Islay are all within easy reach. If you are island hopping around the West Coast then Campbeltown is easily accessible from both Kennacraig (32 miles away) and Claonaig (37 miles away) ferry terminals.
  • Campbeltown Airport is serviced twice daily by flights from Glasgow Airport by Loganair.

From Southend village

Once you pass through the village of Southend, the last turning on the left is signposted to the Dunaverty Golf Course (as pictured above). Follow this track through the golf course, and we are located at the end of the track.

 

Arriving by Road

Glasgow to Campbeltown
The 926 service connects Campbeltown, with Glasgow, Scotland's largest city. West Coast Motors operate this service on behalf of Scottish Citylink. The service operates regularly throughout the day and is the key public transport connection for Campbeltown and Kintyre. The journey takes around 4.5 hours.

Kintyre Bus Service
West Coast Motors run several local services you may find useful including the 400 & 444 Campbeltown to Southend. The bus terminates at the other side of Dunaverty Bay, or you could disembark in the village of Southend. The decision depends entirely upon whether you would prefer a short walk along the beach or through Dunaverty Golf Course. Visit their website for details about timetables and fares.

By Car
By road, drivers can take the A82 and A83 from Glasgow — taking you via Loch Lomond and the gorgeous countryside of Argyll. It is around a 3 hour drive from Glasgow and about 4 hours from Edinburgh. From Campbeltown, drive south to Southend along the B842 for 15 min (9.7 miles / 16 km). From Southend, follow the instructions at the top of the page.
By Taxi
Taxis are plentiful in Campbeltown and reasonably priced. There are two taxi ranks at either end of Main Street or you can phone for a pick up.

Arriving by Ferry

Kintyre Express - Passenger Ferry Service
Kintyre Express is a fast passenger ferry service between Scotland and Northern Ireland. They operate regular services from March to September that link Campbeltown in Kintyre, Ballycastle on the Antrim Coast and Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay.
Their 13.25 metre passenger ferry features a fully enclosed, centrally heated cabin with 12 airline style seats so you can travel in comfort while enjoying a fast journey to your destination. For golfers, cyclists and those with lots of luggage, they’ve got ample room to carry golf clubs, bikes and luggage free of charge.

CalMac - Car Ferry
Caledonian MacBrayne operates a seasonal car ferry service Easter to September from Ardrossan to Campbeltown, with 3 sailings per week each way, an travels via the Isle of Arran on certain days. There are regular train services to Ardrossan from Glasgow.

Loganair gets you from Glasgow to Campbeltown in just 30 minutes. Flights are twice a day, Monday – Friday (plus Saturday during the summer).

Arriving on foot or by bicycle

Kintyre Way
Dunaverty Rock is conveniently located on the Kintyre Way just yards from our door. We are situated between the 6th and final 7th stage is particularly memorable as it meanders round an extremely remote and otherwise inaccessible part of Kintyre, characterised by ominous cliffs, an abundance of wildlife, and breath-taking views of the Atlantic Ocean and world-famous Mull of Kintyre.
Starting from Tarbert, the trail zigzags down the Kintyre peninsula, Scotland’s ‘mainland island’. Its outstanding feature is the stunning and varied coastal views. The trail is not only fully way marked, it also has distance markers at 1-mile (1.6-km) intervals. Most sections can also be cycled. It also hosts the annual Kintyre Way Ultra (first Saturday in May).

Kintyre 66
The Kintyre 66 follows a 66 mile loop around Kintyre on the A83 and B842 public roads, with 6 spurs allowing you to venture even further. Take the Atlantic road south with stunning views to Islay and Jura, and then up the edge of the Kilbrannan Sound overlooking Arran. The K66 helps to highlight 6 areas in Kintyre with information on Southend & Machrihanish, Campbeltown, East Kintyre, West Kintyre, Gigha and Tarbert.
